What is trade waste and who does this apply to?

Trade waste is any liquid waste generated by a commercial or industrial business that is discharged to the council wastewater (sewerage) network. Businesses that generate trade waste include food and beverage processors, commercial kitchens and hospitality businesses, manufacturers and industrial operators, automotive and engineering workshops, laundries and dry cleaners, and healthcare and laboratory facilities.

Why is annual verification required?

Unlike irrigation or municipal water meters, verified every five years, trade waste discharge meters are typically required to be verified annually. The reason comes down to the purpose of the measurement. Trade waste consent conditions set limits on the volume and composition of discharge. Accurate flow measurement is essential for:

  • Calculating discharge volumes, used to confirm you're within consent limits and for billing purposes
  • Demonstrating compliance, councils use your meter data to verify your discharge is within consented volumes
  • Protecting the network, inaccurate measurement of high-volume trade waste discharges can mask consent breaches that damage wastewater infrastructure

Who requires annual verification in Canterbury?

Christchurch City Council requires trade waste consent holders to verify their discharge flow meters annually. Selwyn District Council and Waimakariri District Council have similar requirements. Your specific requirements will be set out in your trade waste consent conditions. NZ Flow Group can help you review your obligations if you're unsure what your consent requires.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my business needs annual trade waste verification?

Check your trade waste consent conditions. If you don't have a copy, contact your territorial authority's trade waste team. NZ Flow Group can also help you review your obligations.

Why annual rather than every five years?

Councils rely on your meter data to verify your discharge is within consented volumes. More frequent verification ensures the data they rely on is accurate, and gives you a documented record of compliance.

My trade waste meter has never been verified, what should I do?

Contact NZ Flow Group. We can carry out a verification to establish your current meter accuracy and issue a certificate. We recommend also reviewing your trade waste consent conditions to understand your full obligations.

Can I combine the annual verification with other maintenance visits?

Yes, NZ Flow Group can combine your annual trade waste verification with a routine meter service inspection, reducing the number of separate site visits required.
