Field work across a municipal site, industrial plant, and farm this week

Most weeks blur together a bit. This one didn't. We were on a council green space site, an industrial plant, and a farm, three completely different environments, and each job left us thinking about something slightly different. On a quiet Sunday, it felt worth writing those thoughts down rather than letting them fade by Monday.

When a valve hasn't moved in 30 years

We were replacing failed flow meters at a council green space site this week, and the meters turned out to be the easy part. The pipework and valves around them were heavily corroded, and the main isolation valve hadn't been operated in roughly 30 years. When we needed to shut it to isolate the line for the meter replacement, it wouldn't close. It was stuck open solid.

A valve like that gives no warning it's a problem. Unlike a valve stuck shut, which you'd notice immediately because the flow stops, a valve stuck open just sits there doing its job, right up until the one day you actually need it to isolate something. That's the trap with equipment that only gets used in an emergency or a shutdown, it can fail years before anyone finds out, simply because nobody's had a reason to ask it to do anything different.

The meter wasn't wrong, the installation was

An industrial site called us out this week because their mag flow meters weren't registering flow. These were meters we'd supplied but hadn't installed ourselves, and once we got into it, the fault had nothing to do with the meters. A few installation details hadn't been done correctly, nothing wrong with the meters themselves, but enough to stop them reading properly on that pipe.

It's a useful reminder for us as much as anyone: supplying the right meter is only half the job. A mag meter is an electrically sensitive instrument, and it will happily sit there reading nothing, or reading wrong, if the installation around it isn't done properly. If you've got a meter that's been playing up since day one, it's worth having someone check the installation before assuming the meter itself is faulty.

A cold farm shed is a warm home for something else

Out on farm this week, power had failed to a pump, and when we tracked it down, a bird's nest had been built inside the pump starter. It's warm in there, and to a bird looking for somewhere dry and sheltered, it's a perfectly sensible place to build a home. We come across this more often than people might expect, farm sheds get neglected, and anywhere with a bit of warmth and cover attracts birds and rodents looking for exactly that.

The one bright spot: telemetry on that site had switched to battery backup when the power failed, so the outage itself was recorded and nothing was lost from a compliance standpoint. But it's still a good example of how a small, unrelated thing, a nest, a chewed wire, a rodent, can take out a whole system with no warning at all.

What we're taking from this

None of these three jobs are dramatic on their own. A stuck valve, a wiring detail, a bird's nest. But put side by side, they point at the same thing: the equipment that keeps water accountable rarely fails all at once, it fails quietly, one neglected detail at a time, until someone finally goes looking.

For us, it's a reminder to keep asking questions on site rather than assuming a meter is at fault when the real problem is upstream or downstream of it. For anyone reading this who's responsible for their own metering, pumps, or pipework, it's worth taking as a nudge to have a look at the parts of your system nobody's checked in a while. If something seems off and you're not sure why, ask. It's usually easier to sort out early than after it's failed on its own schedule instead of yours.
